The photographs of Russian chemist and photographer, Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, showing a bit of Russia before WWI and the Revolution, all in colour. A rare and very good find.

Acrobat.com and pdf embed in your website
Adobe’s Acrobat.com lets you embed pdf files on your website as I read it from RJ Jacquez at the Adobe in eLearning and Tech Communication blog. Smooth I say.

PHP MySQL and encoding
So here we go with new site design and all, and one thing that drives me up the wall is the encoding mess. I have a hungarian lanuage blog, sitting in MySQL using utf-8 encoding. Wordpress reads it perfectly, in MySQL every special character shows up correctly. Then I try to read it with PHP - page encoding: utf-8 -, and it says the text read is ISO 8859-1, and it shows a garbled mess with every...

Book recommendations
In the last two months I have read some new books, and I would like to recommend some of them. Just in case you don’t know what to read. Eric Evans: Domain Driven Design A sensible approach to software and system design, with the goal to keep the model and the code in synch. I haven’t finished it yet, but so far it’s a good book. Donald A. Norman: Emotional Design On the three...

Diving into jQuery
This week I started to learn the secrets of jQuery. The reason is that I want to do some nice effects on my Fractured Bloughts and the main site - like the a rollable featured post link like the BrandfordMagazine with the Lead Article/Recent Post/About This Theme part -, and this seems a bit simpler and less memory/bandwith heavy than Flash. Flash is not an abandoned idea, but that is a bit more...

Struggling
I have to admit that currently I am struggling. Struggling with all the stuff I took upon myself, with work, with keeping in touch with people. Without going too personal, I just want to apologize to everyone that are waiting on me, be it an e-mail, a post, a visit, whatever. Sometimes you make a bad decision, and by the time you realize you made a mistake you are in the middle of a commitment...

The Sound of Silence
OK, the reason for not writing anywhere, not on my blog, on Tumblr and even owing a post to Zoli Erdos: first I had the flu, then I had a visit to France then my crooked grown wisdom tooth blown up, so basically I am a wreck. Hard to write when you fight a toothache. But soon. When I can see.

Officially got the flu
Confirmed by the local medic I got the flu. Fixers are delivering the neccessary supplies to fight the effects, while I spend the days mostly offline under the duvet. Cheers.

Sick
I was totally ran over by some taint, so no coherent thoughts from me for the time being. I hope it will pass pretty soon, I don’t like when my head plays “independence” day.

Cleaning up
I am cleaning up. Giving away clothes I don’t use, giving away plush animals I got for Christmas, Easter - there is at least one plush rabbit in every basket -, throwing out old papers, magazines, newspapers. I am definitely a keeper otherwise. I still have the first metal cone I made on the turning-lathe in high school, and everything I got, old postcards, Matchbox, you name it. So, a...

Vacation part 2.
So it is finally set, I will travel to Nancy, France for the first weekend of Octobre. Flying Friday morning - 3rd of Oct. - I will spend a few hours in Paris, as I promised myself new sunglasses - yes, I know I am a snob, but that’s it. I bought the last one on the Champs Elysees, and lost it while travelling to San Sebastian. I promised myself that I will get the new one from the same...

Roll over week
Well this one was not. There are times when you simply step in, and don’t really care who tries to shove you aside, you just push back. Funny it may seem, but there are people who are not really caring about your postion, age, looks, whatever, and simply will not bow before your will.

Moving UK
Ok, it is embarrassing but I lost the login info for that one. Yes, like, none of my e-mail addresses work with it, so I can’t log into the site anymore. Sad way to kill it off…

Busy bee
The relaxing project just got tuned up a notch, so not much time for anything else - except to sleep, I need that too -, but it will have to stop, I have too much things to do that got neglected. And I really have to find time for a visit to a haircutter.

New design… no graphics, no bling, just an initial layout plan. I want to get closer to a “newspaper” setup, putting forth the latest entries from my tumblr pages, blogs, friendfeeds, flickr and whatever comes to mind. Comments are appreciated as always.

Tumblr integration
Apparently not everything is prefect with the tumblr.com integration. Pictures are sort of missing, will work them out this weekend. Also, work, work, work. And growing the blacklist.

New Design
I start to have an idea of what I want here, so a new design is coming up in the near future - considering how good I am, it means around Christmass. Stay tuned.

Relaxing
So. In the time between my last day at my previous workplace and the day I fly to England I relax and rest. And how do I do that? How? By joining a project with tight deadlines and some stressing conditions. Go figure. Am I sane?

Comments rolling on tumblr too
Ok, I have set up the disqus thing on tumblr, and you can reach it both from the tumblr.com page, and the main page of my site - in the latter case it takes you to the tumblr post, but one less click and anyway, the comment possibility is more visible this way. Karen, I hope every problem you meet will be solved with such a speed :)

I have enabled comments both on Moving UK and on Tids and Bits. At the moment you have to go to the tumblr site - click on the titles - to access them, but will pull it over here to make it easier.

Weird recruiters
I was told about a job possibility. It sounds good, a permanent employment in a good industry. Today I got a call from someone who said I was recommended by someone whom I never heard of, and that they are looking for people to do a 3-4 months long project. Naturally, I turned him down. It turned out the two jobs are the same. Just the guy who called me misrepresented the facts. Do I want to...

Got the airplane ticket, arriving in London on the 25th of August. Now, next step, have to find some accomodation for a month, preferably clean and not more than 500-600 pounds. If you know anything like that, send me comment or a mail. roland.hesz@gmail.com
